A new National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could be named on Thursday, July 24, during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
Following the June resignation of former chairman Abdullahi Ganduje officially due to health issues, though political insiders suspect internal power tussles related to the 2027 elections Deputy National Chairman Ali Dalori assumed the role in an acting capacity.
The upcoming NEC meeting will address key matters, including the appointment of a substantive National Chairman, updates from the Constitution Review Committee, digital membership registration (E-registration), and plans for congresses and by-elections.
Sources within the party reveal that while some leaders prefer Dalori to continue as acting chairman until an official Elective Convention is held, others are pushing for a new chairman to be selected immediately.
Leading candidates include former Nasarawa Governor Tanko Al-Makura and Humanitarian Affairs Minister Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, both representing the North Central zone, which is advocating for the chairmanship to return to the region.
Under Article 13.3 of the APC Constitution, the NEC has the authority to appoint a new chairman or set up a caretaker committee if necessary.
Deputy National Secretary Festus Fuanter confirmed the NEC meeting will take place in Abuja and could result in the nomination of a new chairman, subject to confirmation at a future convention.
Intense lobbying is ongoing, and President Bola Tinubu — as the party’s national leader — is expected to play a critical role in shaping the final decision. He has been briefed on the situation and is likely to attend the meeting.
Opinions remain divided on whether the party should wait for a full convention or appoint a new leader immediately. Regardless, Thursday’s meeting is expected to provide direction.
Aside from leadership matters, E-registration will be a major focus. The system is designed to simplify membership enrollment and improve transparency, aligning with APC’s push for digital transformation.
Deputy Organising Secretary Eze Duru confirmed that the NEC agenda includes departmental reports, the launch of the E-registration initiative, and deliberations on the party’s leadership.
The APC hopes to emerge from the meeting more cohesive and better prepared to meet its political goals, especially as it looks ahead to the 2027 elections.
