The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga, reportedly slumped and died on Thursday shortly after delivering a goodwill message at an event in Benin City.
The incident occurred at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, off Airport Road, during a programme organized by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), where Gbenga was among the awardees.
Witnesses said he collapsed moments after his speech. Attempts to revive him at the venue were unsuccessful before he was rushed to the Military Base Hospital, Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
While the Command’s spokesperson, Efosa Ogbebor, was unavailable for comment, a senior officer of the Corps confirmed the tragedy, noting that the Commandant had already passed away before they reached the hospital.
