The Edo Special Security Squad has detained several individuals suspected of being cult leaders and members in Evboutubu, Benin, as part of efforts to create a safe and peaceful environment for state residents.
Initiated by Governor Monday Okpebholo, the squad, known as “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists,” aims to enhance safety in Edo State.
The squad performed another operation and apprehended a suspected cult leader at his hideout in Iguedaiyi village, where a search uncovered weapons.
Chief Press Secretary to Edo State governor, Fred Itua, revealed that two previously detained suspected cult members contributed to the identification of various hideouts for their associates, where more weapons and dangerous items were discovered.
The squad consists of the Military, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Hunters, Vigilante groups, and reformed cultists, among other vital stakeholders in Edo State, carried out coordinated raids in several hotspots within the Egor Local Government Area.
After the squad’s recent operations, team member Noah Ameloemen mentioned that their actions are informed by intelligence and thorough investigations.
He emphasized that their work is rooted in professionalism and accountability, with community engagement being central to their mission.
Ameloemen stated, “We want the public to understand that our operations are not politically driven, despite attempts to undermine the squad’s reputation. We remain committed to our duties.”
He added, “Our recent actions have been successful, resulting in the recovery of weapons from the detained cult leaders. We’re receiving support from the community, who have expressed significant concerns about the activities of some of the arrested cult members.”
He clarified that while those arrested are cultists, any involvement in other criminal acts will be determined by law enforcement agencies.
Ameloemen reiterated that the squad’s goal is to eliminate kidnappers and cultists, though other crimes may emerge during their operations.
He concluded, “The violence and insecurity in the state must be addressed, and all criminal elements need to be apprehended to ensure the safety of all Edo residents.”
