Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, refuted claims circulating on social media that the National Assembly has approved the establishment of new states.
During a plenary session, he addressed concerns from Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), emphasizing that while the Constitution Review Committee has received more than 42 proposals for state creation, none have completed the entire legislative process.
“I have reviewed over 42 proposals, but none have undergone full deliberation. The process for creating a state is quite extensive and has not been finalized in any case,” he stated.
He cautioned communities against holding meetings or mobilizing efforts for proposed states that have not been legally recognized, insisting that the Senate has not sanctioned any new states. Akpabio encouraged Nigerians to refer only to official announcements from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments and similar matters.
Additionally, the Senate has planned a special session for Wednesday to pay tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, where lawmakers will reflect on his contributions to Nigeria’s progress.
