In a landmark tribute to his predecessor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session of tributes held in Abuja to celebrate the life and legacy of the late leader, who passed away recently in London after a prolonged illness.
President Tinubu, while addressing ministers, top government functionaries, and members of the Buhari family, described the late former president as a “pillar of integrity, patriotism, and national unity,” stating that naming the prestigious university after him was a befitting legacy to immortalize his contributions to Nigeria’s development, especially in the Northeast region.
“Muhammadu Buhari University will stand as a beacon of the values he upheld—discipline, honesty, and service to the nation,” Tinubu declared.
He further assured the Buhari family of his administration’s unwavering support, pledging to uphold the values and policies the former president stood for.
“We will not abandon his family. We will honour his memory by continuing to protect the ideals he lived and governed for,” he added.
The renamed university, located in the heart of Borno State, played a strategic role during Buhari’s presidency, especially in the fight against insurgency and the rebuilding of the region.
The tribute session saw emotional moments, as ministers and aides recalled personal experiences and service under the former president, praising his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
