The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, a prominent Igbo sociocultural organization, has once again urged the federal government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention for four years.
This appeal was made in a statement by National Publicity Secretary Ezechi Chukwu over the weekend in Enugu. The statement called on President Bola Tinubu to utilize his constitutional authority and diplomatic tools to secure Kanu’s release, emphasizing the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusive justice.
Ohanaeze noted that it has been four years since Kanu was arrested in Kenya and later extradited to Nigeria. The organization highlighted that Kanu’s ongoing detention raises moral concerns about the integrity of the Nigerian judicial system.
“The world is observing how long Nigerian authorities will delay the necessary action of releasing Nnamdi Kanu. Given the unlawful nature of his extradition from Kenya and the questionable grounds for his arraignment, it is puzzling why Kanu has been held for four years without receiving justice,” he stated.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo, therefore, calls on President Tinubu to exercise his constitutional powers and diplomatic avenues to facilitate Kanu’s release, in alignment with the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusive justice,” Ohanaeze concluded.
