The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has announced that the All Progressive Congress (APC) emerged victorious in 16 local governments during the election that took place on Saturday in the state.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), 12 political parties took part in the local government elections, which included positions for chairman, deputy chairman, and councillors across 18 local government councils.
On Sunday, Dr. Joseph Aremo, the Commission’s Chairman and Chief Returning Officer, stated that the APC secured all the councillor seats in the 16 local government areas.
Aremo mentioned that the results for the Owo LGA and Ondo West LGA, which were cancelled and rescheduled for Sunday due to the incorrect logo of one of the parties appearing on the ballot papers, will be announced later.
It was reported that the election in Ondo West LGA was cancelled because the outdated logo of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was used on the ballots.
The ODIEC chairman indicated that following the conclusion of the Ondo West LGA election later today, the final two results would be revealed at 7:00 p.m.
He noted that the elections for Owo LGA and Ondo West were cancelled due to the logo mix-up involving a political party, and these results will be shared by 7 p.m. after today’s election.
NAN also reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of the 13 registered parties for the election, withdrew its candidacy 48 hours before the event. The party’s Director of Media and Publicity in the state, Mr. Leye Igbagbo, stated that the withdrawal stemmed from a lack of confidence in ODIEC’s ability to conduct a fair and credible election.
The following parties participated in the election: Action Alliance (AA), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), Action Peoples Party (APP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Boot Party (BP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), as well as Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Young Progressive Party (YPP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), National Rescue Movement (NRM), and Action Democratic Party (ADP).
