Mikel Merino came to Arsenal’s rescue as the Premier League leaders were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea in a heated London derby on Sunday.
Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo was dismissed late in the first half after a reckless challenge on Merino, upgraded to a red card following a VAR review. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Chelsea took the lead early in the second half when Trevoh Chalobah headed home from Reece James’ corner.
Arsenal, however, hit back quickly. Bukayo Saka weaved past Marc Cucurella and delivered a pinpoint cross for Merino, who powered in a close-range header to level the score—his fourth goal of the campaign, once again stepping into a makeshift striker’s role under Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners stay five points clear of Manchester City and six ahead of third-placed Chelsea, but they will lament missing the chance to widen the gap in the title race. Chelsea, meanwhile, will be relieved to have avoided defeat in a battle filled with high intensity, tough tackles, and rising tempers.
Both sides arrived with confidence after midweek Champions League victories, yet that momentum quickly faded amid a first half littered with fouls and cautions. Arsenal were without injured defender William Saliba, and Chelsea took advantage with sustained pressure before Caicedo’s sending-off shifted the dynamics.
Chalobah’s opener—Chelsea’s ninth set-piece goal of the season—briefly gave the hosts hope of a famous victory, but Arsenal’s substitutions, including the introduction of Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke, helped swing the momentum back.
A frantic ending saw Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez produce key saves to deny both Saka and Merino, ensuring the bruising encounter finished level.
