Over 10 victims of a ghastly road accident on the Benin–Auchi highway were rescued on Saturday, following the swift intervention of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
The governor, who was en route to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area with his convoy, met a heavy traffic gridlock shortly after the bypass and decided to step down to assess the situation.
According to reports by Channels Television, Okpebholo discovered several accident victims lying helplessly on the ground, many of them bleeding profusely, while passersby and motorists looked on without knowing how to intervene.
Deeply moved, the governor immediately directed his aides to deploy two of his security Hilux vehicles to evacuate the injured to the nearest medical facility. He personally supervised the rescue operation, ensuring that each victim—including a woman with severe injuries—was carefully lifted into the vehicles for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted that the accident occurred when the driver of a white Toyota Venza, with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, drove against traffic and collided head-on with three fully loaded commercial minibuses. The violent impact left dozens injured and brought traffic to a complete halt.
Governor Okpebholo remained at the accident scene until the last victim was safely evacuated under security escort before continuing his journey to Irrua.
His decisive and humane response earned him applause from residents, motorists, and sympathisers who hailed his intervention as a display of true leadership.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) nor the Edo State Government had issued an official statement on the incident.
