Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the state of emergency declared in Rivers State will lapse on September 18.
Speaking after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election, Wike described the exercise as peaceful and successful, noting that the expiration of the emergency rule would allow the State House of Assembly to resume its legislative functions.
He explained that with both the state and local governments now having representatives in place, the conditions were favorable for lifting the emergency.
President Bola Tinubu had imposed the six-month emergency rule in Rivers to avert political instability, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly.
