The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday executed a sweeping disciplinary action at its 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, expelling several prominent members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Others removed from the party were Senator Samuel Anyanwu, senior lawyer Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose, Austin Nwachukwu, and a number of additional members accused of persistent anti-party activities.
According to an official statement released on the party’s verified social media platforms, the expulsions were “overwhelmingly endorsed by delegates,” marking what the PDP described as a decisive step toward rebuilding internal cohesion and reinforcing discipline ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement emphasized that the measure was aimed at eliminating internal rifts and longstanding conduct that has hampered the party’s progress.
Further details indicate that the motion for the expulsions was initiated by Chief Olabode George, a former national vice-chairman (South), and seconded by Bauchi State PDP chairman, Samaila Buga. The motion was subsequently adopted through a voice vote conducted by Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed.
None of the expelled members issued immediate comments.
However, late Saturday night, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, issued a subtle dig in response to the action. Posting on X, he dismissed the convention as a mere social gathering.
“They went to Ibadan to start dirty December in November,” he wrote. “When people decide to begin their own dirty December early, one can’t take whatever they say seriously. They gathered for a social party, enjoyed themselves and got intoxicated. They’re free to say anything.”
