The political atmosphere within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is tense following reports that two of its sitting governors — Enugu State’s Dr. Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State’s Senator Douye Diri — are finalising plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources close to both camps suggest that high-level discussions have been ongoing for weeks, with the defections expected to take place before the end of the year. The move, if actualised, could significantly strengthen the APC’s hold in the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones — regions traditionally considered PDP strongholds.
A Major Strategic Win for APC
The APC’s current political strategy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been to consolidate national unity by attracting influential figures from opposition parties. The planned defection of Mbah and Diri aligns with this agenda, offering the ruling party a golden opportunity to deepen its presence in zones where it previously struggled for dominance.
In Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah’s defection would mark a major breakthrough for the APC in the South-East. The party has long sought to make inroads into the region, which has largely remained loyal to the PDP since 1999.
