On Saturday night, human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his supporters, known as the ‘Obidients,’ for their attack on Omoyele Sowore, a former candidate for the African Action Congress. In a statement he released, Adeyanju condemned the efforts to disable Sowore’s Facebook page as undemocratic and an attempt to silence dissenting opinions.
He remarked, “It’s disheartening that Obi’s supporters have collaborated to report Sowore’s Facebook page simply because he is vocal about the truth regarding their candidate. This disgraceful act resulted in the deactivation of Sowore’s account, which is not representative of democracy. If you genuinely seek a better Nigeria, you cannot suppress opposing voices.
“To be frank, Obi’s term as governor of Anambra was marked by numerous failures, including doctor strikes, educational decline, and his refusal to conduct local government elections. The unresolved murders of MASSOB members during his administration remain a concern, yet his supporters strive to depict him as virtuous.
“He shifted from APGA to PDP, where he ran alongside Atiku, and then to the Labour Party, indicating a lack of stable ideology. The PDP he was part of contributed to Nigeria’s decline.
“Sowore has consistently advocated for truth and justice. The attacks from the Obidient supporters, endorsed by Peter Obi, seek to obscure the truth.”
He also emphasized, “No one has animosity toward Peter Obi; our opposition lies with the falsehoods and image management propagated by his followers. We refuse to let politics become a cult. Nigeria deserves transparency and accountability.”
