Kawu Sumaila, the senator for Kano South, has officially switched from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This transition was announced during a Senate session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read a letter from Sumaila stating that his departure from the NNPP was due to “compelling and undeniable developments within the party,” which he characterized as “severely divided and dysfunctional.”
With Sumaila’s defection, the APC now has 65 senators in the 10th National Assembly, thereby reinforcing its majority in the upper chamber, amidst celebratory chants as he moved to the majority section. Sumaila explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to better serve his constituents, whom he considers his primary focus.
Following this change, the Senate’s current composition includes 65 members from the APC, 33 from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), five from the Labour Party, two each from the NNPP and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and one from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
In May 2022, Sumaila had previously left the APC for the NNPP, but on April 23, he announced his return to the ruling party through a Facebook post, affirming the accuracy of rumors about his defection and reiterating that his main concern remains the welfare of his constituents.
