The Labour Party’s caretaker committee, headed by Senator Nenadi Usman, has initiated an investigation into Barrister Julius Abure concerning accusations of misconduct, including corruption, mishandling of party funds, and actions detrimental to the party.
During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator Usman claimed that Abure has been falsely presenting himself as the national chairman after his removal and has been treating the Labour Party as a personal business to fulfill his own interests, rather than promoting unity which he is accused of undermining for personal gain.
In light of these allegations, the caretaker committee has established a disciplinary panel, led by Senator Ireti Kingibe and with Peter Ameh as the secretary, to examine the charges against Abure and suggest appropriate disciplinary actions.
Abure has been summoned to appear before the panel to address multiple petitions and accusations levied against him.
Additionally, the caretaker committee expressed concern over Abure’s alleged takeover of party structures without adhering to proper procedures, such as neglecting to conduct necessary congresses at various levels leading up to a national convention.
The team under Nenadi Usman has committed to reinstating internal democracy and announced that a schedule for conducting congresses and electing national executives will be shared soon.
This development follows the establishment of a disciplinary committee by the faction led by Julius Abure, which is investigating allegations of anti-party activities against Abia State Governor Alex Otti and several other members. They noted, “NEC reviewed the anti-party activities of Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor,” resulting in the formation of the disciplinary committee chaired by Ayo Olorunfemi, which has been given two weeks to present its finding.
