The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action in response to the tragic incident of March 27, 2025, in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area. He has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state under any guise.
Additionally, the governor has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), pending further investigations into the unfortunate killings.
A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., clarified that the vigilante group involved in the gruesome act was neither profiled nor registered with the Edo State Security Corps. The statement emphasized that their actions do not reflect the values, principles, or security objectives of the Okpebholo administration as enshrined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law.
Governor Okpebholo, after reviewing the preliminary report on the incident, directed security agencies to intensify investigations. So far, fourteen (14) suspects have been arrested, with a manhunt ongoing for others involved, led by a special team set up by the Inspector General of Police.
The Edo State Government reaffirms its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens to move freely and conduct lawful business across Nigeria.
Furthermore, the government is in close contact with the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Kano State Government, given that many of the deceased hailed from Kano.
Governor Okpebholo appeals for calm and assures all stakeholders that justice will be served efficiently, transparently, and proactively.
