On Tuesday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State engaged in a verbal exchange following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s visit to former Governor Bisi Akande’s residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The two leaders discussed ongoing tensions over the management of local government areas during a private two-hour meeting. In response, APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi criticized Adeleke for visiting Akande, especially after violence erupted leading to the deaths of APC members following the local government elections held on October 15, 2022.
Olabisi noted that Adeleke appeared to be pleading with Akande to resolve the ongoing political dispute concerning the reformed council chairmen and councilors. He expressed disbelief that Adeleke would seek counsel from Akande after the PDP’s alleged violent acts, which included the killing of Hon Remi Abass, an APC council chairman, and other party members.
The APC further asserted that Akande is a true democrat and would not compromise the interests of his party due to covert arrangements. They suggested that if Adeleke seeks redress following a Supreme Court decision set for February 10, 2025, he should approach the court rather than negotiate politically. They advised him to collaborate with the reinstated council members to deliver democratic benefits throughout the state.
In contrast, the Osun PDP praised Adeleke for initiating a dialogue with Akande, labeling it a demonstration of leadership and statesmanship. PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi rebuked the APC’s criticism of Adeleke’s actions, claiming those in the APC were upset because their attempts to disrupt state stability had failed.
Bisi pointed out that despite the loss of six party members to violence allegedly caused by APC-affiliated individuals, Adeleke showed responsibility by engaging in discussions with various political elders for the sake of peace and rule of law. He highlighted the importance of maintaining democracy and condemned the notion of celebrating the violence attributed to the APC.
The PDP chairman affirmed Adeleke’s initial intention was to work with compassionate individuals to prevent further discord in Osun. He emphasized that genuine democrats honor the law, praising Adeleke’s commitment to peace as a display of strength rooted in public support. He reiterated the party’s dedication to restoring legally elected officials through lawful means, distancing them from tactics that undermine democratic principles, and encouraged Adeleke to persist in his consultation efforts.
