Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has issued a directive asking all residents, including politicians, to refrain from visiting local government secretariats in order to avert further violence and safeguard public property.
This action comes in response to violent confrontations stemming from an alleged attempt by dismissed APC chairmen and councillors to seize control.
In a message shared on his official X account on Monday evening, Adeleke emphasized the necessity of this measure. “In light of reports regarding a failed illegal takeover of local government councils in Osun by dismissed APC officials, I urge all residents, irrespective of political affiliation, to avoid local government secretariats to protect public assets and prevent additional bloodshed,” he stated.
The directive arrives amid rising tensions, as workers from the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees have withdrawn their services across the state, locking down the council secretariats. “This action is crucial, particularly since the secretariats are expected to remain secured due to the service withdrawal by NULGE members across the state,” he added.
Addressing the violence, Adeleke expressed sorrow over the casualties and extended his condolences to the affected families. He noted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost five members, with many others injured, highlighting specific incidents in Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government, Ola Oluwa, and Ikire.
To restore order and ensure safety, the governor has instructed security forces to take control of local government secretariats. “I have tasked security agencies with overseeing all local government offices and assure Osun residents of their safety and the protection of lives and property,” he affirmed.
