Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege announced that 10 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Delta State House of Assembly are poised to switch allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC), indicating a major shift in the state’s political dynamics.
During an event on Saturday welcoming Chief Itiako Ikpokpo, a two-term chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area, into the APC, Omo-Agege—who was the APC’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections—shared this news in Uro-Irri. He asserted that the PDP’s grip on power in Delta State is “quickly disintegrating.”
“A significant realignment within the Delta State House of Assembly is imminent as 10 legislators plan to leave the PDP for the APC,” Omo-Agege remarked.
He noted that with seven existing APC members in the House, the addition of 10 defectors would boost the APC’s representation to 17, potentially altering the leadership balance in favor of the opposition.
Omo-Agege credited the APC’s increasing influence in Delta State to the economic strategies of President Bola Tinubu, which, he claimed, had elevated the state’s federal funding to over N1 trillion within just 18 months.
“The financial progress under Tinubu’s governance shows that the APC is providing effective leadership. This success is attracting more politicians to our party,” he stated.
He highlighted Ikpokpo’s defection as a pivotal moment for the APC, expressing that he had actively encouraged Ikpokpo to join the party, and appreciated his steadfast support during the 2023 campaign while he was still in the PDP.
In his speech, Ikpokpo vowed to bolster the APC’s organization in Delta State and extend its political influence. “We must warmly accept newcomers, as unity is crucial for us to overcome the PDP in the 2027 elections,” he asserted.
Supporting this view, APC Isoko South Chairman Vincent Egbogbo described the defections as a precursor to even greater successes. “The APC is gearing up to assume control of Delta State in 2027, and we must unify our efforts to ensure a complete dismantling of the PDP,” Egbogbo concluded.
