Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, has stated that there is currently no agreement regarding a merger with any other opposition party.
During a press conference in Abuja, the former governor of Anambra State addressed rumors suggesting that the Labour Party had formed a merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). While he did not confirm or deny any ongoing merger discussions, he firmly stated that “no agreement yet” exists.
He called on all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliations, to band together, asserting that only through unity can they overcome the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he criticized for “mismanaging” the nation’s resources. Obi lamented the dire security situation in Nigeria, noting the tragic loss of lives due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping for ransom.
Additionally, he challenged the current government’s assertions about combating corruption, arguing that corruption remains widespread in Nigeria, alongside rising governance costs that have significantly increased public debt. Obi emphasized that this situation has been exacerbated by government officials’ mismanagement of public funds, particularly through frequent international travel in 2024.
