The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cancelled the land allocation originally given 20 years ago to construction firm Julius Berger for the purpose of building 40 residences for judges of various categories. This announcement was made on Monday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the judicial quarters at Katampe District, led by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
Wike mentioned that he informed the Managing Director of Julius Berger about the land revocation during a dinner, emphasizing that it was done for the benefit of the public. He expressed astonishment that a plot of land had remained undeveloped for over two decades. “I’m grateful they didn’t develop it. Now, we are in a position to build this impressive structure,” he stated.
The minister indicated that the judicial quarters are expected to be completed within 15 months and reassured that occupancy certificates would be issued to judges from the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, and the FCT High Court.
“We aim to make this a model project that will be finished on schedule. By God’s grace, the Chief Justice will return next year to inaugurate it. I also believe the Court of Appeal Division, which was initiated by a previous administration, will be ready by then as well. My Lord, you are fortunate. God’s timing is perfect.
“I am delighted that it is during your tenure as Chief Justice of Nigeria that this significant project is commencing. This is not mere coincidence; it is part of a divine plan. We extend our gratitude to you for presiding over the ceremony and for being the one to officiate at its completion,” Wike said.
He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing judges’ living conditions and emphasized the administration’s focus on judicial independence. “Mr. President stated that the terms of service are vital for judicial independence. To protect the judiciary from outside influence, especially from the legislature and executive, it is essential to ensure proper remuneration.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun, in her response, characterized the construction of the residences as an important initiative to support judicial officers effectively. She highlighted the judiciary’s essential role in maintaining the rule of law, delivering justice, and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
“For judicial officers to fulfill these responsibilities, they need the appropriate resources and environment to work with independence, impartiality, and integrity. These residences will offer a secure and peaceful space, allowing them to focus better, work more efficiently, and think clearly. The judiciary, as an independent branch of government, must be adequately equipped to function at its best,” Justice Kereke-Ekun stated.
