He also cautioned state attorneys-general to refrain from actions that might provoke the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee for professional misconduct, indicating that bypassing judicial rulings could lead to accountability issues for legal professionals.
Stressing the need for robust local governance, Fagbemi expressed that autonomy should empower local governments, enhancing public participation in political processes and ensuring that they fulfill their constitutional obligations without undue state influence. He highlighted the expectation of increased grassroots political engagement following the ruling.
Fagbemi warned local government leaders against misusing funds and underscored that the court’s grant of autonomy was a means to empower the grassroots, not facilitate corruption. He asserted that any misuse of public funds would result in serious legal consequences.
Reiterating the importance of good governance, he mentioned that local governments must focus on essential services like primary education and healthcare while avoiding extraneous projects outside their mandate.
