Edo Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, accused outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki on Sunday of trying to hinder a smooth transition of power ahead of his swearing-in scheduled for Tuesday. This accusation followed Obaseki’s claims made on Friday that he had not yet received an invitation to the inauguration ceremony.
Okpebholo’s comments were shared in a statement from his media aide, Godspower Inegbe, which was distributed to journalists in Abuja. Obaseki had previously alleged that Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress were organizing the inauguration without consulting the state government.
Obaseki condemned this approach, labeling it lawless. In response, Okpebholo criticized Obaseki’s remarks as irresponsible and noted that such comments are inappropriate coming from someone who has not even reached out to congratulate his successor since the election concluded.
The statement included the following points: “Obaseki claimed that Senator Okpebholo did not invite him to the inauguration on Tuesday. This notion is absurd and dubious. Since Okpebholo’s victory was announced, Obaseki has continually worked to impede a peaceful transfer of power.
As the sitting governor, Obaseki should clarify to the people of Edo and Nigeria whether he has ever invited the governor-elect for a meeting or tour out of courtesy. Has he even congratulated Senator Okpebholo since the election?
We call on the people of Edo to dismiss Obaseki’s careless statements and lend their support to Senator Okpebholo’s incoming administration to address the numerous issues created during Obaseki’s tenure.”
Furthermore, Okpebholo noted that Obaseki had not been seen in the Government House during the 72 hours leading up to his official departure from office.
