Traditional rulers and community leaders representing Igbos in 12 South-West and South-South states have distanced themselves from Mr. Chibuike Azubike, who recently declared himself “Obi Ndigbo Lagos” and announced plans to host an Ofala festival on September 13.
The leaders, operating under the Association of Ezendigbo Na Uzoije, Southern Zone, made their position clear in a communiqué signed by their president, Eze John Ezebuadi, Ezeudo of Iba LCDA, on Thursday.
According to the communiqué, Azubike is neither a member of the association nor a recognized representative of the Igbo community in Lagos.
Report indicate that the 65-year-old Azubike was arrested on Wednesday alongside three others after publicizing plans for the unveiling of a ₦1.5 billion “Obi of Lagos Palace.” Police investigations have since revealed the project was a fraudulent scheme.
The association urged the Lagos State Government, the Council of Obas and Chiefs, security agencies, and the public to disregard Azubike’s claims.
“We categorically state that Mr. Azubike is neither a member of our Association nor does he represent Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State. His claims are baseless and an affront to the dignity of our organisation,” the communiqué stressed.
The group further condemned Azubike’s fundraising drive, noting that the Ofala and new-yam festivals are sacred to recognized Igbo traditional authorities. They warned that his actions were misleading and damaging to the image of Igbos in Lagos.
In addition, the association apologised to the Lagos State Government, the police, and Igbo dignitaries whose names were linked to Azubike’s activities without their approval.
Reaffirming their commitment to peaceful coexistence, the leaders pledged to restructure their operations at the grassroots to ensure Igbo cultural practices respect the traditions of their host states.
“We will no longer tolerate actions that offend our hosts or tarnish the image of Ndigbo. Anyone misrepresenting our culture or undermining our community will be held accountable,” the statement concluded.
