US President Donald Trump on Saturday dismissed the prospect of an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, following his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, saying only a direct peace agreement could truly end the conflict.
Both Washington and Moscow pointed to some areas of common ground after their three-hour talks, but no breakthrough emerged on halting the war that has killed tens of thousands and devastated Ukraine.
“A great and very successful day in Alaska!” Trump declared on Truth Social after returning to Washington, noting his meeting with Putin was followed by late-night calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO allies.
He insisted that “the best way to end this horrific war” was through a peace accord, not a ceasefire, which he argued is often fragile.
Zelensky, who is set to meet Trump at the White House on Monday, welcomed the proposal for a trilateral summit involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia, saying it was the right forum to address key issues.
Meanwhile, fighting raged on: Ukraine reported 85 Russian drone attacks and a ballistic missile strike overnight, while Moscow claimed to have captured two more Ukrainian villages.
