Early Thursday, Russia launched a significant missile and drone assault on Kyiv, resulting in at least two fatalities, 16 injuries, and fires breaking out in both residential and commercial areas of the Ukrainian capital.
The attack, which occurred shortly after the U.S. resumed military aid to Ukraine—including artillery and mobile rocket systems—saw Russia firing 18 missiles and over 400 drones, according to Ukrainian officials.
Kyiv’s military administration director, Tymur Tkachenko, reported via Telegram that “residential buildings, vehicles, warehouses, and office spaces are on fire.” This intensification of nighttime bombardments is further straining Ukraine’s air defense systems, prompting thousands of residents to seek shelter.
Moscow has not yet reacted to the latest strikes, but Russian state media indicated that its defense forces intercepted 14 Ukrainian drones overnight.
This renewed offensive coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirming his commitment to Ukraine’s defense while expressing frustration over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reluctance to engage in constructive peace negotiations.
Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur during the ASEAN summit to discuss efforts to de-escalate tensions.
The impact of Thursday’s attack was felt across eight of Kyiv’s ten districts, with air raid sirens sounding for over four hours and smoke enveloping the sky over the capital’s three million inhabitants. As the conflict persists, international focus remains on impending sanctions and diplomatic discussions, despite the rising civilian casualties.
