The recent utterances of Asue Ighodalo, at the factional PDP stakeholders meeting organized by Mr. Tony Aziegbemi’s led faction of Edo PDP, where he appeared to have severally talked down on Senator Monday Okpebholo’s public display of respect and appreciation towards elders and leaders of traditional institutions has left many stunned and disappointed.
This egregious display of ignorance and lack of respect especially for traditional institution by the PDP former governorship candidate and its party faithfuls in recent time, has raised genuine concerns about Asue’s true intentions and fitness for leadership.
Senator Okpebholo’s gesture of kneeling as a sign of respect especially to heads of traditional institution, is a time-honored tradition in Edo land and one that is deeply ingrained in the culture and customs of the people. For Asue Ighodalo to downplay and talk down on this noble act of respect with so much recklessness and disdain, demonstrates a profound lack of understanding and respect for the very people he seeks to lead. It is a stark reminder that Asue is out of touch with the values and traditions that are dear to the hearts of Edo people.
Asue’s unfortunate comments has been widely condemned by well meaning Edo people even within the ranks of the PDP as well, as traditional leaders, who have described his words as “ungrateful” and “disrespectful.” His lack of regard for the traditional institution especially, is a clear indication that he is not fit to lead the good people of Edo State. The people of Edo State deserve better than a leader who disrespects their traditions and institutions.
By boycotting Asue’s candidacy at the polls, the people of Edo State clearly have dodged a bullet. They have avoided the catastrophe of having a leader who does not respect their traditions, institutions, and values. Instead, they have chosen a leader like Senator Monday Okpebholo, who embodies the values of respect, gratitude, and humility that are dear to the hearts of Edo people.
