On Monday in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu officially enacted a bill to create the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State, and committed to further support for the local community.
According to a statement from the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the university will be located in Ogoni town of Tai. During the signing event at the State House, President Tinubu emphasized that the university’s establishment aims to empower the citizens of Ogoni and enhance opportunities for their development and participation.
He stated, “Today signifies a pivotal moment in our quest for environmental justice, education, and sustainable development. The Ogoni people have long been at the forefront of advocating for these values and have endured significant environmental damage.”
“It’s not just about founding a university; it reaffirms our unwavering dedication to the Ogoni people, the Niger Delta, and the entire nation. For years, the Ogoni have led the charge for environmental restoration, influencing discussions on crucial issues both nationally and globally. By signing this legislation, we are decisively addressing past grievances while opening doors to new opportunities for education, growth, and prosperity.”
The President highlighted that the university will be a center of excellence, preparing young Nigerians to confront current environmental challenges, promote clean energy initiatives, and contribute to sustainable economic development.
He expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, especially the Senate and House leaders, for their thoughtful consideration of the bill. “I would also like to commend the Ogoni delegation for their persistent advocacy for justice, which is inspiring and will be rewarded.”
“As we move forward, I urge all stakeholders—including traditional leaders, academic institutions, the private sector, partners, and youth—to support this university as a symbol of knowledge, unity, and progress. Together, we will ensure that it fulfills its purpose and acts as a catalyst for transformative development throughout the country,” the President asserted.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, mentioned that the university would focus on interdisciplinary programs in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology to arm students with the skills necessary to address both regional and national ecological challenges.
National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, stated that the university’s creation would help resolve enduring issues and facilitate efforts to restore Ogoniland, advocating for inclusive development and environmental sustainability in the region.
Sen. Mpigi Barinada, leader of the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to the President for the bill’s enactment, acknowledging the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in promoting its passage. Barinada noted that the university would provide hope for the Ogoni community and encourage the pursuit of peace.
