Nigerian artist Tems gave an emotional speech when she accepted the Best African Music Performance award for her song “Love Me Jeje” at the 67th Grammy Awards.
Taking the microphone, Tems expressed her thanks by saying, “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for allowing me to be here and for my amazing team.
“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I want to show my appreciation to you, mom, for everything you’ve done for me and my brother.
“Happy birthday, Mum. I also want to acknowledge my team, including Muyiwa, Wale, my wonderful stylist, and my lovely friends…I love you all.
“Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has transformed my life in so many ways.”
Tems won the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards with her song “Love Me Jeje.”
This award marks her second Grammy victory after her first for contributing to Future’s hit “Wait For U.”
In a strong field, “Love Me Jeje” surpassed competitors like Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow,” Asake’s “MMS,” Chris Brown’s “Sensational” (featuring Davido & Lojay), and Burna Boy’s “Higher.” Remarkably, all nominees in this year’s category were Nigerian artists, reinforcing Nigeria’s prominence in the global music scene.
This latest Grammy win enhances Tems’ reputation as a leading figure in African music globally.
The Best African Music Performance category, which was only introduced last year, was previously awarded to South African artist Tyla for her song “Water.”
Tems’ victory this year highlights the incredible talent emerging from the continent.
The 67th Grammy Awards took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday.
