The military forces in Nigeria are now explicitly forbidden from participating in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and other actions considered inconsistent with military ethics.
In addition, personnel are prohibited from body piercing, tattooing, engaging in disorderly conduct, and being intoxicated while on or off duty.
This directive is outlined in Section 26 of the updated Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, which President Bola Tinubu signed on December 16, 2024.
The document obtained by our reporter states, “An officer must not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, or bestiality.
“He/she is prohibited from associating with or participating in the activities of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and engaging in cross-dressing, among other things.
“An officer is not permitted to have body piercings or tattoos. Disorderly behavior, public disturbances, or any actions leading to disgrace are not allowed. Officers must remain sober at all times, whether on or off duty.”
The terms of service also disallow officers from having romantic relationships with subordinates or their spouses.
“An officer must not engage in romantic relationships with any soldier, airman, airwoman, or their spouses,” it stated.
Additionally, military personnel must fulfill financial obligations promptly, including vehicle licensing and insurance, and they cannot join secret societies or political parties.
“An officer is required to pay all financial dues punctually, especially those mandated by law. It is a serious offense for an officer to be caught without valid vehicle registration or insurance. Issuing a bad cheque is also an offense.
“The document further states, “An officer is forbidden from being a member of any secret society or political party and must not partake in any related activities, even as an observer.
“Cultural or traditional religious societies, which are not secretive in nature, are excluded from this definition.”
Serving personnel are also restricted from engaging in private business or misusing government assets for personal gain.
“An officer shall not participate in private business endeavors. They must not use government resources, their name, position, or connections with commercial enterprises in a manner that interferes with their official duties or could tarnish the reputation of the Service.
“An officer must not accept gifts, favors, or entertainment from those ranked below them or from enlisted personnel,” the conditions emphasized.
However, the document did not specify the disciplinary actions for any personnel who breach these regulations.
