The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has reported that House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh is currently being questioned at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North & South Federal Constituency, is accused of assaulting an e-hailing (Bolt) driver named Stephen Abuwatseya.
A viral video shows the lawmaker slapping the driver after he inquired about the delivery fee, questioning whether the driver knew to whom he was speaking. Additionally, the lawmaker purportedly threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences.
In a statement released on Monday, police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that an investigation is underway.
According to her, initial findings suggest that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh when a conflict regarding the delivery method arose.
Adeh stated, “The incident took place on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, involving Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, the representative for Aba North and South in Abia State.”
She expressed deep concern over Ikwechegh’s disrespectful attitude toward the Inspector General of Police, especially after he allegedly slapped the driver and brazenly suggested that the driver contact him.
“After the alleged assault, he scornfully said, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ displaying a worrisome disregard for law enforcement authority,” Adeh remarked.
Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station for questioning.
Adeh further stated that Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu has instructed a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
She assured that the Command is dedicated to carrying out an impartial investigation and ensuring justice. Once the investigation is concluded, appropriate legal measures will be taken.
