APC Edo Gubernatorial Candidate Monday Okpebholo Comprehensive Agricultural Policy
Vision: To position Edo State as a leader in agricultural innovation and sustainability, driving economic growth, enhancing food security, and creating job opportunities through a well-rounded and inclusive approach.
1. Strategic Agricultural Development
Crop Diversification: Promote the cultivation of a diverse range of crops, including staple foods, cash crops, and high-value crops. Support initiatives that encourage farmers to adopt modern farming techniques and sustainable practices to improve productivity and income.
Agro-Processing: Establish state-of-the-art agro-processing centers to add value to raw agricultural products. These centers will focus on processing crops such as cassava, maize, and plantain, as well as dairy and meat products. Incentivize private sector investment and innovation in agro-processing to enhance local value chains.
2. Livestock and Aquaculture Enhancement
Livestock Development: Implement programs to improve livestock farming practices. Support the development of integrated livestock systems, including poultry, cattle, and goats, with a focus on breed improvement, disease management, and production efficiency.
Aquaculture Initiatives: Leverage the state’s water resources to promote sustainable aquaculture. Develop fish farming infrastructure and provide training on best practices to increase fish production and contribute to food security.
3. Infrastructure and Market Access
Infrastructure Improvement: Invest in rural infrastructure, including roads, storage facilities, and irrigation systems. Enhance connectivity between farms and markets to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure farmers can access local and international markets efficiently.
Market Development: Facilitate the establishment of farmer cooperatives and markets to improve market access and ensure fair prices for agricultural products. Support programs that connect farmers directly with consumers to enhance the value chain.
4. Research, Innovation, and Technology
Research and Development: Support agricultural research and development to drive innovation and improve farming practices. Collaborate with research institutions and universities to develop and disseminate new technologies and methods that can be adopted by farmers.
Technology Integration: Promote the use of modern agricultural technologies, such as precision farming, smart irrigation, and digital platforms for market information and financial services. Provide training and resources to help farmers adopt these technologies effectively.
5. Youth and Women Empowerment
Youth Engagement: Create specialized programs to engage and empower young people in agriculture. Offer training, mentorship, and access to resources to foster a new generation of agricultural entrepreneurs and professionals.
Women’s Support: Develop initiatives to support women in agriculture, including access to training, finance, and resources. Encourage women’s participation in all aspects of the agricultural sector, from production to management.
