IGP Egbetokun Steps Aside, Disu Appointed New Police Chief

by Tunexreporters

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office following directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Sources within the Presidency disclosed on Tuesday that Egbetokun stepped down after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, currently the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd indigenous Inspector-General of Police on 19 June 2023 by President Tinubu, with his appointment confirmed by the Police Council on 31 October 2023.

Although he turned 60 on 4 September 2024 — the mandatory retirement age — the National Assembly amended the Police Act to enable him to complete a statutory four-year tenure unless removed by the President.
Following the amendment, he was expected to remain in office until 31 October 2027 before this latest development.
