Tinubu Decorates Tunji Disu as Acting IGP, Awaits Police Council Confirmation

by Tunexreporters

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally decorated Tunji Disu with the insignia of office as Acting Inspector-General of Police during a ceremony at the State House, Abuja.

The event, held at the President’s office, was attended by top government officials including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu’s appointment followed Egbetokun’s resignation, officially attributed to personal and family reasons. However, presidency sources indicated the former police chief was asked to step down after a meeting with the President.
Though Disu was due for retirement on April 13, 2026, the amended Police Act permits an Inspector-General to serve a fixed four-year term irrespective of age, potentially keeping him in office until 2030.
His confirmation now rests with the Nigeria Police Council and the Senate.

Disu’s elevation is expected to trigger the retirement of several senior officers, in keeping with police tradition when a junior officer is appointed IGP.

A seasoned officer with over three decades of service, Disu previously led the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, headed the Intelligence Response Team, and served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

He is also recognised for his international training, peacekeeping experience in Sudan, and achievements in judo at national and international levels.
