Nigeria and Brazil on Monday signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering trade, diplomacy, science, aviation, and finance, marking what both governments described as a new chapter in their bilateral relations.
The signing ceremony, held at the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília, was followed by a joint press briefing where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the imminent return of Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil giant, to Nigeria—five years after it suspended operations in the country.
Tinubu said the resumption of Petrobras’ activities would reignite cooperation in the energy sector, stressing that Nigeria’s vast gas reserves make the partnership both timely and mutually beneficial. He also praised Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his commitment to revitalising the Nigeria–Brazil partnership, particularly in energy, aviation, manufacturing, and technology transfer.
Highlighting Nigeria’s reforms, Tinubu assured Brazilian investors of transparency and an open business environment. “The painful reforms we introduced are now yielding results. We have more resources for the economy, less corruption, and a stable currency market,” he said.
President Lula, on his part, described the renewed engagement as critical in an era of global protectionism. He emphasised the potential for cooperation in agriculture, oil and gas, machinery, fertilisers, and aviation, announcing a new direct flight between Lagos and São Paulo, to be operated by Air Peace.
The five MoUs signed include a Bilateral Air Services Agreement, endorsed by Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, at the Itamaraty Palace.
Both leaders reaffirmed their shared vision to transform historical ties into tangible cooperation, with Tinubu declaring: “Africa is the new frontier, and Nigeria is ready to partner with Brazil to unlock its vast opportunities.”
