The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has stood by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, amid the recent uproar over Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s visit to Benin City.
While inaugurating the new Edo Line transport terminal in Benin City on Tuesday, Wike urged Obi to refrain from “playing to the gallery” and politicizing governance issues. He emphasized that leadership is challenging, likening it to being a receptacle for criticism. Wike reflected on past interactions, noting that when Obi previously visited his state, he had informed him in advance and provided logistical support, highlighting the importance of notifying governors for security reasons: “If he does not tell you anything and an incident occurs, the governor will be held accountable.”
Wike contended that Okpebholo did not prohibit Obi’s visit but merely requested prior notification for safety coordination. “Your statement is correct,” Wike affirmed, indicating that Okpebholo only sought to ensure protection during Obi’s visit. He stressed that it was vital for political figures to exercise caution during this sensitive period, warning that any harm could unjustly implicate the governor.
Wike encouraged Okpebholo to remain steadfast in his decisions, asserting that as a governor, facing criticism is part of the role. “If no one talks about you, then something is off,” he said, urging Okpebholo to prioritize the support from his constituents.
Wike’s defense follows backlash against Okpebholo’s comments from last Friday, which cautioned Obi against visiting Edo State without security clearance. This situation arose after Obi’s visit to the School of Nursing Sciences at St. Philomena’s Hospital on July 7, where he donated ₦15 million for ongoing projects. Okpebholo raised concerns about security given recent violence, particularly against religious leaders, a statement that faced sharp criticism, including accusations of “executive rascality” from Labour Party senators and a demand for a retraction and apology from human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN). As of now, Obi has not publicly addressed the situation.
