The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honor the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

A statement issued by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, noted that this holiday follows the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The declaration, made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, was authorized by President Tinubu. The Minister emphasized that the holiday serves as a tribute to the late President’s dedication to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic advancement, and his lasting legacy in governance and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, integrity, and a commitment to the nation’s unity and progress. This public holiday allows all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the principles he championed,” the Minister said, urging citizens to honor the late President’s memory by fostering peace, patriotism, and national unity in line with his vision for a thriving, united Nigeria.

As previously mentioned, national flags will be flown at half-mast during the seven-day mourning period beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The Federal Government expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for his soul’s peaceful repose.

On Monday, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda announced the burial arrangements for the former Nigerian President, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

During a press briefing, the Katsina governor noted that after discussions with the late President’s family and close associates in London, it was decided that the former leader’s remains would return to Katsina on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, by noon, and that burial would occur in Daura, his hometown, at 2 PM on the same day.
