Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Shettima, accompanied by the President’s Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, was sent to the United Kingdom to coordinate and accompany the remains of the late Nigerian leader back to the country for final burial rites.
The Vice President touched down in London early Monday morning and was received by top Nigerian officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, at the airport.
In a solemn moment of statesmanship and solidarity, Shettima led a high-powered delegation to the residence of the late President in London, where he paid a heartfelt condolence visit to Hajiya Aisha Buhari, the widow of the deceased, and other grieving family members.
Speaking during the visit, Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s deep condolences to the Buhari family and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honouring the legacy and service of the late former President.
The Vice President’s presence in London marks a significant phase in the state arrangements being put in place for the return of Buhari’s remains and the national mourning period that will follow.
More details regarding the funeral itinerary and arrangements are expected to be released by the presidency in the coming days.
