The Edo State government announced that it has initiated an emergency public health response, mobilizing essential resources and expertise to control the spread of diphtheria and protect the health of its residents.
On June 9, the state sent 70 doses of anti-diphtheria vaccines to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, following the deaths of two individuals from the disease the previous week.
In a statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, it was confirmed that the government is aware of the outbreak affecting specific areas of the state.
The statement indicated that hospitals statewide are on high alert and have been directed to enhance case detection, immediately isolate suspected patients, and ensure appropriate clinical management per national and international guidelines.
The announcement stated, “The government is fully aware of the recent diphtheria outbreak reported in some areas of the state.
“In response, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has initiated an emergency public health response, allocating all necessary resources and expertise to manage the situation and protect residents’ health.
“Governor Okpebholo is actively overseeing monitoring and surveillance efforts, collaborating closely with the state Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders to ensure a prompt and effective containment of the disease.
“Current key initiatives include procuring vital vaccines to launch a statewide vaccination campaign targeting at-risk populations, particularly children.
“The government is also enhancing public awareness through various channels including radio, television, community outreach, and social media to inform citizens about diphtheria symptoms, preventive measures, and the significance of timely treatment.
“All hospitals across the state are now on high alert, advised to step up case detection, immediate isolation, and proper clinical management of suspected cases following national and international protocols.
The statement also mentioned that medical personnel are being trained and equipped to respond effectively, and the state’s disease surveillance network is being expanded to quickly trace and monitor potential contacts.
In addition, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, is leading the medical response, working tirelessly with the emergency health task force to curb the spread of the disease and provide timely updates to the public.
School owners and proprietors are also collaborating with the government to establish early warning systems, enforce hygiene standards, and conduct health screenings where necessary to protect schoolchildren, who are particularly vulnerable.
Furthermore, Governor Okpebholo has called a multi-sectoral emergency meeting with representatives from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community development groups to coordinate efforts and strengthen the response framework.
The government reassured the public that there is no reason to panic, as the situation is under control and all necessary measures are being implemented to prevent further spread. Edo State has demonstrated a robust capacity for managing public health emergencies, and this situation is no different.
The governor encouraged residents to remain calm but vigilant, advising them to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen glands in the neck, or difficulty breathing.
