The Edo State Government has issued a strict warning against any cult-related gatherings or celebrations planned for July 7. In tandem with this warning, authorities are urging local business owners to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to bolster statewide security measures.
The directive was announced on Monday by Noah Idemudia, spokesperson for the Edo State Security Squad (Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultism). The announcement coincided with the parading of two suspects, Muhammed Oakumhe and Omukoro Aghogho, who were apprehended in separate raids in Uromi (Esan North-East LGA) and Auchi (Etsako West LGA)
The suspects were found in possession of two pump-action shotguns during an operation led by the Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Idemudia emphasized that the arrests were the result of actionable intelligence and made it clear that the state’s security apparatus will not tolerate disruptions to public peace.
“We are warning those involved in criminal activities in Edo State to stay clear. If anyone has plans to engage in unlawful activities, it is better to cancel them. Anyone caught will face the consequences of the law,” Idemudia stated.
Business owners were also reminded of the July 31 deadline to install CCTV cameras on their properties. Strict enforcement of this policy is set to begin on August 1, as part of a directive from Governor Okpebholo to enhance surveillance and aid law enforcement in crime prevention.
Grassroots Surveillance Expansion
To further strengthen security at the community level, the state security committee announced plans to collaborate with traditional institutions. This partnership will involve profiling local youth leaders to improve grassroots monitoring and safety across Edo State.
