Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has called on the newly appointed Commander of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, to intensify efforts aimed at freeing the state from insecurity.
The governor made the appeal on Thursday in Benin City during the commander’s courtesy visit, emphasizing the need for heightened collaboration to secure what he described as a “new Edo.”
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. He assured the military that the state government would continue to provide all necessary support to strengthen security operations.
Welcoming the new commander, the governor noted the excellent relationship previously enjoyed with the outgoing brigade leadership and expressed confidence that the partnership would continue seamlessly.
“Our priority is the safety of the people and the protection of their property,” Okpebholo said. “We are ready to work closely with you to ensure Edo remains safe. We are also procuring multifunctional drones to enhance security surveillance, and they will be delivered soon. Help us secure a new Edo that is free of insecurity.”
He encouraged Balogun to inform the government of any operational needs requiring state intervention and highlighted ongoing improvements to public infrastructure, including projects around military formations.
Okpebholo also disclosed that work is progressing on the 36-kilometre Gele-Gele road project extending from the Ekenwa Barracks area.
In his response, Brigadier General Balogun said visiting the governor was a priority after assuming command a week earlier. He commended the state government for its continuous support and acknowledged the governor’s commitment to security.
He pledged to strengthen the existing collaboration between the military and the state, saying his goal is to ensure Edo residents “sleep with both eyes closed” and conduct their daily activities without fear.
Balogun also outlined areas requiring urgent attention, including the completion of the Ekenwa Barracks Road, the stalled renovation of the brigade school, and the need for drones to boost technologically driven security operations.
Dignitaries present at the meeting included Secretary to the State Government Umar Ikhilor, Chief of Staff Gani Audu, Permanent Secretary of Government House and Protocol Edith Sede, and other senior officials.
