A final-year student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has died in a road accident while celebrating the completion of his final examinations with fellow students.
The tragedy occurred on Monday, according to information shared by the Facebook page Inside Edo. The students had just finished their last exam and were driving in a convoy when one of the vehicles attempted to overtake another, lost control, and crashed into a stationary truck.
Eyewitnesses said the risky overtaking manoeuvre caused the driver to veer off course, leading to the fatal collision. Residents who rushed to the scene were unable to save the victim.
Similarly, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the students were driving recklessly along the highway shortly after their signing-out celebration. The deceased was part of the celebrating convoy when he attempted to overtake a moving truck but instead rammed into another vehicle parked by the roadside.
Attempts to reach the Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Cyril Mathew, were initially unsuccessful. However, Mathew later confirmed the incident, stating that one person died and five others were injured in the crash. He added that the reckless overtaking during the students’ convoy celebration led to the accident.
