Akpabio noted that Edo State gained significant national attention during Adams Oshiomhole’s tenure as governor. However, he criticized the subsequent administration, alleging that Oshiomhole’s handpicked successor from the World Bank pursued policies focused primarily on securing loans, awarding contracts, and misappropriating public funds.
During his tenure as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Akpabio visited Edo State and witnessed what he described as a flagrant assault on democratic principles. He condemned the former governor’s refusal to swear in 14 elected members of the House of Assembly, forcing the state legislature to operate with only 10 members. Akpabio characterized this action as a deliberate destruction of democratic institutions.
Political Realignment in Edo
The Senate President highlighted the recent defection of Senator Neda Imasuen from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Senator Imasuen reportedly stated that he could no longer continue to “labour in vain,” signaling a shift in the state’s political dynamics.

Akpabio praised current Governor Monday Okpebholo, suggesting that many of the initiatives being implemented today were divinely inspired ideas he himself championed during his time as governor. He expressed confidence that under the new administration, Edo State is experiencing renewed prosperity and will continue to advance.

The Senate President acknowledged the significant role played by the Oba of Benin from the earliest days of Governor Okpebholo’s electoral victory, recounting the delegation’s visit to the palace to pay homage. He commended Okpebholo as a unifying leader capable of bringing diverse groups together.

Akpabio recommended that President Bola Tinubu recall former Governor Godwin Obaseki to provide a comprehensive account of his stewardship while in office, suggesting the need for transparency and accountability in governance.
