In the midst of the ongoing leadership crisis in the Labour Party (LP), the faction led by Julius Abure held a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday at the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja, attended by prominent party leaders and stakeholders.
Attendees included factional National Chairman Julius Abure, National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk, National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, National Youth Leader Ken Ahanotu, and state chairmen from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Also present was the party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.
In his opening remarks, Abure expressed his dedication to upholding the party’s integrity and ideals. “We have invested in building this party, and under my leadership, the Labour Party will never be compromised,” he stated. He emphasized that their commitment was evident during the 2023 elections, despite both internal and external challenges the party faced.
Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed addressed the gathering, urging for unity and a renewed focus as they prepare for the 2027 general elections. “The Labour Party is not a party to abandon. Its achievements cannot be overlooked,” he remarked. “We received over 10 million votes, which were later reduced to 6 million—everyone knows the circumstances surrounding that. I come as a peacemaker.”
He recalled how a coalition had previously succeeded in ousting a sitting Nigerian government and stressed that this is the ambition of the Labour Party for 2027.
This meeting occurs amidst ongoing internal divisions within the Labour Party, as various factions vie for legitimacy in the national leadership.
