Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, has officially resigned from the party.

His resignation comes as he prepares for the 2027 elections and has acknowledged the creation of a new coalition party, the Alliance Democratic Congress.

Atiku communicated his decision in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, which was addressed to the chairman of the PDP’s Jada 1 ward in Adamawa State. A copy of this letter was shared on X by Abdul Rasheeth, the Special Assistant on Media to the former Vice President, on Wednesday.

In the letter, he stated, “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunities the party has provided me.

“My tenure as Vice President of Nigeria for two full terms and my two presidential campaigns have been some of the most important moments of my life.

“As one of the founding members of this respected party, making this decision is indeed painful for me.

“However, I feel compelled to separate from the party given its current direction, which I believe strays from our original principles. It is with a heavy heart I resign, acknowledging the irreconcilable differences that have developed.

“I wish the party and its leaders the best moving forward. Thank you once more for the support and opportunities.”
