The joint security forces in Benue State have reported the arrest of individuals connected to a recent attack in the Yelwata region, which resulted in multiple fatalities.
Benue State’s Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, revealed the arrests during a press conference on Sunday but did not disclose the suspects’ identities. This announcement followed President Bola Tinubu’s directive on Wednesday for military leaders and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to apprehend those responsible for the brutal assault.
The police commissioner credited Governor Hyacinth Alia for his support in making these arrests possible. Additionally, Emenari confirmed that deployments from IGP Kayode Egbetokun have arrived in Benue and been assigned to rural areas to enhance security measures.
He also advised landlords and hotel proprietors to thoroughly vet their tenants and guests to help prevent violence in the state.
During his visit to Benue last Wednesday, Tinubu expressed his expectation for arrests to be made, questioning why no progress had been observed. He urged law enforcement to stay alert for information and called on military leaders for continued vigilance in restoring safety.
The previous week, gunmen, believed to be herders, attacked the Yelwata community in the Guma Local Government Area, resulting in numerous fatalities and displacing thousands.
