The recent wave of violence in Benue State, particularly in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, has left communities in mourning and sparked nationwide outrage. Over 200 lives, predominantly women and children, were tragically lost in attacks perpetrated by suspected armed herdsmen between June 13-14, 2025. The assailants, reportedly using sophisticated weapons and explosives, set homes ablaze, displacing thousands and devastating livelihoods in one of Nigeria’s key agricultural regions.
Dr. Mrs. Mary Alile, the National Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has passionately condemned the killings, calling for immediate action to restore peace and security. “The senseless loss of lives in Benue is heartbreaking and unacceptable,” Dr. Alile stated. “As a nation, we must unite to protect our people and ensure justice for the victims. These attacks must stop, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
The violence, which has displaced over 3,000 individuals now sheltered in camps in Makurdi, has intensified calls for a robust government response. Dr. Alile emphasized the need for comprehensive measures, including strengthened security and humanitarian support. “The women and children of Benue are suffering the most, and we cannot stand by while families are torn apart,” she said.
Dr. Alile also called for dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict, which include land disputes and farmer-herder clashes. “We need sustainable solutions that promote peaceful coexistence and protect the rights of all citizens,” she added. Her remarks align with broader demands from civil society and political leaders for a coordinated approach to end the cycle of violence that has claimed over 1,000 lives in Benue since May 2023.
As President Bola Tinubu visits Benue today to engage with stakeholders, Dr. Alile expressed hope that the visit would mark a turning point. “I commend the President’s commitment to addressing this crisis, and I call on all leaders to work together to bring lasting peace to Benue,” she said. “The people of Benue deserve to live without fear, and it is our collective responsibility to make that a reality.”
The APC National Woman Leader’s plea reflects a shared sentiment for urgent action, justice, and healing for the affected communities, as Nigeria grapples with this ongoing tragedy.
