The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Musa Ikhilor, has stated that Governor Monday Okpebholo has opted for a peaceful approach to ease the tensions caused by the murder of 16 travelers in Uromi.
In an interview on TVC Breakfast Show monitored by Tunexreportes, he noted that the governor’s trip to Kano was crucial in preventing a potentially severe crisis.
“Governor Okpebholo, in his wisdom, has selected the route of de-escalation. His visit to Kano has averted what could have been a disastrous situation. While not everyone may grasp the gravity of this, those familiar with Nigeria’s history and ethnic relations will understand the importance of his actions.
“During the Kano visit, we engaged not only with the government and citizens of Bokore but also with leaders of several ethnic minority groups, including Igbo and Yoruba communities. They expressed appreciation, recognizing that the governor’s visit was more than just a condolence gesture; it was a critical step in safeguarding their people in Kano, as well as the numerous Edo indigenes living there,” he remarked.
Ikhilor mentioned that the Uromi community managed to rescue 11 out of the 27 travelers, with three currently receiving hospital treatment. The remaining individuals have been returned to Kano by the state government.
He also highlighted that the governor met with the families of the deceased, offered them comfort, and assured them that justice would be pursued.
Okpebholo has promised compensation for the innocent lives lost in an effort to reduce tensions.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) is actively looking into the incident, which is why we have suspended the commander of the Edo Security Corps. The governor is taking proactive measures and will not tolerate any exceptions in this case.
“People should not only lament the lives lost but also acknowledge those who were saved. The Uromi community deserves credit for their courage in rescuing those 11 individuals. We are also working to further inform the community to prevent them from being swayed by incitement.
“Regarding the issue of security, this government has taken a proactive stance. Governor Okpebholo has acquired over 75 new Hilux vehicles for security agencies, which have been allocated accordingly. Previously, security personnel were reliant on outdated Sienna vehicles. Additionally, the governor has obtained power motorcycles to allow security operatives to pursue bandits in forested areas, and we are seeing significant progress,” he stated.
