The Senate has expressed its support for its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, by passing a vote of confidence. This unanimous decision took place during Thursday’s session, initiated by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and backed by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West).
This action follows claims made by the suspended Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), who spoke at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York. She alleged that her suspension was a result of her accusations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.
According to report, Natasha has also filed contempt charges against Akpabio and others related to her six-month suspension without pay from the Senate.
In light of these developments, the Senate has called on Nigerians to remain focused and not be swayed by the allegations, noting that the matter is currently under judicial review. Citing Order 40 of its procedural guidelines, the Senate asserted its inability to intervene in issues being considered by the court.
