President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially requested the Senate to approve the appointment of five individuals as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a letter sent to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, President Tinubu mentioned that these nominations are in accordance with Section 154(1) of the amended 1999 Constitution, which gives the president the authority to appoint electoral commissioners with Senate consent.
The five nominees are: Umar Yusuf Garba from Kano; Saad Umar from Bauchi; Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako from Anambra; Mohammad I. Ngoshe from Borno; and Dr. Owede Kosioma Eli from Bayelsa.
“I am pleased to submit the following five nominees for confirmation by the Senate as Resident Electoral Commissioners in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the letter from the President stated.
“While I hope the Senate will consider and approve the nominees promptly, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, my highest regards.”
Additionally, President Tinubu has also sought Senate confirmation for Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi’s appointment as the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in accordance with Section 3(1)(b) of the NCoS Act, 2019, which outlines the process for appointing the agency’s leadership.
He emphasized the importance of the Correctional Service in Nigeria’s justice system and requested that the Senate expedite the confirmation process. This request has been sent to the Senate Committee on Interior for a report within one week.
